Healthy Families First
HDR and ZGF Architects in joint venture for the BC Children’s and BC Women’s Hospital, led the design of the new 640,000 square-foot Teck Acute Care Centre.
Since opening its doors in 1982, the BC Children’s Hospital remains the only tertiary care facility dedicated to the province’s one million children. Located next door, the BC Women’s Hospital and Health Centre provides specialized health services to women, newborns, and families, and is one of Canada’s largest obstetrical centres. For years, both facilities have experienced space shortages while trying to accommodate the over 200,000 visits they receive annually. The new Acute Care Centre will accommodate the growing demand for services to treat seriously ill or injured women and children, while incorporating 21st century health care practices.
The new Acute Care Centre includes an emergency department, inpatient units, pediatric intensive care, medical imaging, hematology/oncology, and procedural suites. In addition, the facility also includes a high-risk labour and delivery suite, and a neonatal intensive care unit.
