An Interdisciplinary Home for Earth and Space Exploration

The Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building 4 is home to Arizona State University’s School of Earth and Space Exploration and the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering, which has established a degree program in research geological engineering. The building is designed to meet the needs of diverse program areas including environmental engineering, synthetic chemistry and energy research.

Key features include:

• Modern and flexible teaching and research spaces help attract students.
• Interactive kiosk exhibits, an exploration theater and highly visible laboratories show-off science and support the university’s high school teacher enrichment program and K-12 student STEM engagement initiatives.
• Two floors are open to the public, offering formal and informal opportunities to ignite curiosity in students and visitors alike.  
• Large, open, “dirty” spaces are used to assemble, evaluate and remodel spacecraft and space-exploration systems, supporting the school’s goal of reaching Mars someday.
• Vibration absorption in controlled areas support research being conducted at the nano-scale.

The ISTB 4 project was designed using an integrated project delivery process. Team members included  HDR, Ehrlich Architects and Sundt Construction.
