SLAC Photon Science Laboratory
SLAC Photon Science Laboratory
Collaboration and Wellness in an Advanced Research Environment
This high performance space expands SLAC’s photon science program by enabling a range of synthesis, characterization, simulation, theory, and modeling capabilities through a multidisciplinary research approach.
HDR employed an integrated design approach to this interior fit-out at the Arrillaga Science Center, synchronizing all lab planning, interiors and major utility infrastructure. Its diversity of advanced research laboratories include chemistry labs, biology labs, laser labs, a calibration cleanroom, a metrology cleanroom, and a nano-fabrication cleanroom. Wet and dry labs are organized along a central service corridor, with all building core elements organized at the building edge to allow for long term flexibility and efficiency. Laser labs and research cleanrooms are organized on the lower level to take advantage of the higher vibration performance on the ground floor slab.
Amidst this intensive research use, the space also encourages collaboration and provides a comfortable and attractive work environment that engages the surrounding landscape and campus context. HDR worked with SLAC to devise a custom workplace strategy based on researchers’ unique time spent in dry versus wet lab environments. Offices are consolidated on the north side of the building to provide access to ample campus views and promote multi-disciplinary collaboration. Central skylights and light wells allow for natural daylight to penetrate deep within the upper two levels, while shared conference rooms are organized to create collaborative office neighborhoods and promote interaction within the building.
The fit-out achieved LEED Platinum certification for Commercial Interiors.
