What We Support
Grant Spotlight: Garfield Community Farm
An "ice cream truck for veggies" is how Nick Burdette, Northeast region bridge lead, described the idea behind the Garfield Community Farm mobile market.
In 2009, Nick and his wife were among a group of volunteers who started the farm on abandoned residential properties in Pittsburgh's Garfield neighborhood — a community with an aging population, with many experiencing food insecurity.
Through a grant from the HDR Foundation, the farm's mobile market is back on the road, making stops in parts of the community with limited access to fresh produce, including churches, a retirement home and near public transportation stops.
“It's wonderful to be at a company where people care this much about doing good,” Nick said.
