Shoreway Environmental Center
Shoreway Environmental Center
Setting a high bar for innovative recycling and material handling operations.
Taking to heart what we heard South Bay Waste Management Authority was looking for, we designed the sustainable features, site civil, mechanical and electrical systems for the Shoreway Environmental Center. Now it's a national model for sustainable building practices and innovative recycling and material handling operations.
The environmental center includes a new state-of-the-art materials recovery facility for sorting single stream recyclables from residents and businesses; expanded transfer station for increased recycling and customer convenience; green building features, such as solar panels and use of natural light; and new environmental education center and demonstration gardens.
The LEED® Gold certified environmental center also received a Gold Recycling Systems Excellence Award from the Solid Waste Association of America in 2012.
In February 2013, SBWMA announced that 2 million tons of residential and commercial recyclables and organic materials have been diverted at the Shoreway Environmental Center since 1994, resulting in the reduction of approximately 5 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. This is equivalent to removing more than 743,000 cars from the road over the same time.
