Prince of Wales Hospital – The Bright Alliance
Translational Concepts Offer Opportunity for Cancer Research
Prince of Wales Hospital's new facility provides a patient-focused model of care in which cancer research, clinical care and education are integrated to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients, as well as a platform for breakthroughs in cancer research. Located at the Randwick Hospitals Campus, the 161,460-square-foot facility incorporates the Nelune Comprehensive Cancer Center (NCCC), the Scientia Clinical Research project [previously known as the Australian Advanced Treatment Center (AATC)], and the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network expansion.
Key features of The Bright Alliance include:
- The nine-story building incorporates five stories for the NCCC, two stories of currently active space for the Scientia Clinical Research project, and three additional shell floors for future expansion.
- The NCCC includes radiation oncology, consulting suites and ambulatory care services. New office accommodations were designed to integrate courtyards for patients and staff at the first and second levels.
- The Scientia Clinical Research project provides an innovative approach to a broader integrated role: A venue and the associated services that support clinical trial activities for commercial operators such as pharmaceutical, biotechnological and medical device companies, as well as principal researchers from the Health-Science Alliance.
- A pharmacokinetics laboratory provides a sample preparation area where specialized laboratory equipment is kept and general lab activities are carried out. Samples are processed using mass spectrometers, UPLC chromatography and refrigerated centrifuges.
- One major focus of the design team was the space's impact on its occupants which translated into the creation of a positive patient and staff environment within challenging site conditions.
