National Center for Infectious Diseases Laboratory & Vivarium
Support for Infectious Disease Research
The new National Center for Infectious Disease Laboratory and Vivarium Facility replaces aging infrastructure on the CDC's main campus and co-locates the remainder of NCID functions from other locations in Atlanta. The new facility enhances the CDC’s research on malaria, parasitic diseases, Salmonella, and E. coli, and supports AIDS research.
Key design features include:
- An optimum program to accommodate user needs, emphasizing integration with the CDC campus.
- Flexible, highly interactive work environments within the containment perimeter.
- Glazed corridors that provide light and views into the open, modular laboratories while separating all the mechanical systems from the lab space.
- Core facilities that are located at the intersection of the lab and office components on each floor maximize efficient space use.
- A central, internal circulation path to facilitate employee access to the labs.
- Shortened supply and exhaust ducts that run the length of each floor to increase energy efficiency.
