Dragonboat Pub

A Sustainability-Inspired Renovation for the Penticton Community

Located in the southern part of Penticton, British Columbia, Dragonboat Pub is a sustainable and thoughtful addition to the community. By prioritizing environmental consciousness and connection to nature, HDR helped transform an existing structure into a cost-effective gathering space for residents and visitors. Through retrofitting, the design team preserved the value of the original structure and leveraged its existing embodied carbon.

Pairing Sustainability and Thoughtful Design

Nestled in the picturesque surroundings of Skaha Lake's waterfront, the team used the naturally scenic environment and expansive lake views to their advantage. The focus on natural daylighting and incorporating an indoor/outdoor dining experience speaks to Penticton’s nature-inspired values and creates a comfortable and environmentally progressive community space. Design details and sustainable additions include:

  • A lush, green softscape that surrounds the building, with native vegetation lining the perimeter
  • Locally-sourced wood paneling used on the interior and exterior for a warm and inviting atmosphere
  • Large sliding glass doors that bring in light and can be opened during the warmer months, as well as the removal of pre-cast panels to increase natural daylight
  • Low-flow plumbing fixtures and energy-efficient electrical systems
  • All-electric HVAC systems and acoustic felt panels that address environmental and acoustic considerations

Designed to Reflect Regional Values

The transformation of Dragonboat Pub into an innovative community space has been significantly influenced by the active participation of the local Indigenous community in Penticton. From the outset, Indigenous members have been integral to shaping the vision and purpose of the establishment, ensuring it meets the needs of the area’s diverse population. Indigenous artists from these communities have contributed their artwork to adorn the new building, adding cultural richness and significance. This revamped pub is a vibrant gathering place in Skaha Lake’s marina for all Penticton residents, symbolizing unity and shared heritage and establishing Dragonboat Pub as a community staple.
