Transforming Former Landfill and Railyard into the Bay Area’s Newest Sustainable Community

The Baylands site, located in the City of Brisbane, neighbors San Francisco to the north with the San Francisco Bay to the east. Previously used as an industrial and landfill site, Baylands is one of the largest undeveloped sites on the west of the San Francisco Peninsula. Having been neglected for years due to contamination challenges posed by previous land uses, the Baylands is prepared to fill the growing needs of the community and region.

Access to Transit and Walkability

With high visibility and convenient access to public transit and highways, the Baylands site has a prime location for connections to not only San Francisco, but also Silicon Valley and the East Bay. Caltrain’s commuter rail service runs through the site along with the Muni Metro light rail system that provides quick access to San Francisco. As a complement to the transit connections embedded in the site, the Baylands prioritizes mobility with highly walkable neighborhoods and sustainable, active transportation options.

Preserving and Enhancing the Bay Area’s Wetlands

Nestled in between mountains and the bay, the Baylands seek to emphasize and restore the natural beauty of the site while offering much needed housing and community in the Bay Area. To maintain a more sustainable future, the master plan works to preserve and ecologically enhance the wetlands and riparian habitat that have been neglected for decades, connect the various land uses through a series of open spaces, provide a balanced mix of land uses, and include a multimodal circulation and transit network.

The master plan combines both regional and local retail needs and a variety of housing types to build a mixed-use community that can support a rapidly growing population. In addition, the site will support 7 million square feet of commercial and office space for urban living where one can not only live but also work and play.
