UMC Health and Wellness Community Hospital
UMC Health and Wellness Community Hospital
Growing Strong
For more than 50 years, UMC Health System has provided most of its acute and outpatient care services on its main campus. The single location — which the organization shares with the Texas Tech Health Science Center — serves a large population spread across four different states, often leaving the medical center strained. Working closely with UMC, we analyzed their strategic plan and identified ways to promote growth. The result is the Health and Wellness Community Hospital, a sleek new facility that enhances UMC’s current capabilities while providing an opportunity to expand services to new patients.
A Unified Vision for Wellness
The new hospital provides wellness activities and outpatient services such as radiology, surgery and infusion, allowing the main UMC campus to focus on acute care delivery. The facility takes a novel approach to wellness and community engagement with its split design consisting of two towers connected by a central lobby that opens to an outdoor, courtyard garden. One side houses the medical services while the other includes a fitness and rehabilitation center open to the public.
This combination of clinical services and community health resources is a growing healthcare facility typology aimed at prevention of illness through the provision of wellness activities.
Key Design Features Include:
- Dynamic glazing on the front façade automatically tints based on the sun’s intensity
- A drive-up pharmacy kiosk eases the patient experience
- Vehicle access from two roads and internal loop with entry on all sides
- Potential for future expansion
The hospital’s modern design and unique services represent the client’s commitment to the totality of patient wellness and the health of the Lubbock community.
