The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) presented HDR with the 2025 Veterans Engagement Award. The distinction honors freight rail industry employers who demonstrate positive policies toward U.S. veterans and implement unique programs and practices to hire, recognize, support, and engage with veterans in the workplace and the broader community.

“This award reinforces HDR’s strong dedication to supporting our military veterans and heroes,” HDR’s Global Freight Rail Director Bill Hjelholt said. “We thank ASLRRA for their recognition as we continue to expand efforts that provide support, appreciation and career opportunities that our veterans deserve.” Hjelholt accepted the award on behalf of HDR during ASLRRA’s annual conference and exhibition in Denver, Colorado.

HDR was recognized for its support of veterans through various programs and resources, including an employee networking group; resource libraries; mentoring and fellowship initiatives; and continuing education opportunities. In one such example, the firm compiled a collection of stories into a video highlighting veteran employees and the unique skills they bring to civilian teams. In addition, in the past three years, the HDR Foundation has awarded more than $180,000 in grant funding to veteran nonprofits.

“The broader freight rail industry, including short lines, has consistently and aggressively hired veterans becoming a welcoming career choice for veterans,” said ASLRRA President Chuck Baker. “We know that veterans bring a strong commitment to safety and the mission, the ability to work tough jobs, and valuable experience to the industry. The ASLRRA is pleased to honor these efforts by highlighting HDR’s tremendous accomplishments.”
