Dave Redemske, ASHE, CCHP, architect and senior health planning principal at HDR, was presented the 2024 Individual Distinction Award during the Healthcare Facilities Symposium & Expo for his career-long efforts to improve healthcare facilities in correctional and mental health environments.

“I’m honored to be among this outstanding group of award winners and humbled to see HDR’s forward thinking work in correctional healthcare recognized,” Redemske said. “I hope this recognition will drive more healthcare designers toward re-thinking how healthcare is provided to those who are marginalized.”

Redemske’s career in healthcare design spans 33 years. He has designed facilities throughout the U.S., Canada and the Middle East.  As the recipient of the first HDR Research Fellowship, Redemske published research examining healthcare in the U.S. prison system, “Providing Healthcare in the Prison Environment.” Through his research and design projects, he has become an internationally recognized expert in medical and mental health facilities for those who are incarcerated.

"This recognition acknowledges Dave's tireless efforts to improve care environments within correctional and mental health facilities," said James Atkinson, AIA, ACHA, EDAC, LEED AP, director of health planning at HDR. "His research, and project work, will inspire future planners and architects to create the change he has advocated for throughout his career."

Redemske is one of few architects who carries the Certified Correctional Health Professional credential from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. In 2019, he received the HCD 10 Award in the Researcher category.
