Sustainability director for HDR's architecture practice, Colin Rohlfing, has been named a LEED Fellow, the most prestigious designation awarded by Green Business Certification Inc. and the U.S. Green Building Council. The LEED Fellow title recognizes green building professionals who have demonstrated master-level technical proficiency, as well as proven impact in leadership, commitment, service and advocacy.

“Someone once described Colin as having an enterprising spirit. He is one of the most passionate people I know in our sustainable industry,” said Susan Heinking, AIA, LEED Fellow, senior vice president of high performance and sustainable construction at Pepper Construction Group and Colin’s nomination sponsor. “His leadership is tenacious, yet open-minded; technical, yet rooted in beauty, and inspiring to those who work with and around him.”

Since the very early stages of Colin’s career, he has been dedicated to creating design solutions for the built environment that respect both natural and social systems. His passion for improving the lives of people through architecture has led him to specialize in sustainable and regenerative design as he aims to reduce the negative impacts within the built environment.

“I can’t emphasize enough the positive influence that Colin has had on our global practice,” said Doug Wignall, FAIA, president of architecture for HDR. “Colin brought a new level of energy, inspiration, talent, and vision to the firm’s sustainability efforts — not just for the architecture and design practice, but throughout the company. From day one he challenged the status quo, determined to push the boundaries of sustainable design norms and achieve higher strata of accomplishment within the profession. This honor is well-deserved.”

A 10-year veteran at HDR with 22 years of experience, Colin leads sustainable design for HDR’s architecture practice. He promotes quality design efforts across all departments, and he is acutely involved in securing and delivering design projects. Colin has also led the development of numerous tools and processes for elevating sustainable practices, including the firm’s Regenerative Design Framework.

The 2024 class of LEED Fellows will be honored on Wednesday, Nov. 13, during the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.
