HDR Supports Planting of 10,000 Trees Through Arbor Day Foundation

In partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, HDR supported the planting of 10,000 trees as part of the Bootleg Fire restoration in Oregon’s Klamath Basin.

The 2021 fire was Oregon’s third-largest wildfire in history, devastating this critical area for biodiversity and a favored nesting site for bald eagles. The restoration of the tree canopy is anticipated to support a wide range of wildlife, providing a home for birds, big game and small mammals.

The project also supports one of the most ambitious fish restoration projects in U.S. history. With plans to remove four dams on the Klamath River, an extensive stretch of 420 miles will be opened, benefiting species like salmon, bull trout, and the endangered Lost River sucker fish.

"This gift to help restore the ecosystem is meaningful to our communities and staff, who were impacted by the 2021 fire season," said HDR Oregon Area Manager Tracy Ellwein. "It’s rewarding to see HDR’s commitment to environmental stewardship by giving back in impactful ways to create a lasting legacy in this resource-rich area."

The trees planted in the basin are expected to significantly improve the water quality of the river, supporting a thriving ecosystem in the years ahead.

Environmental Impact Over 40 Years:

  • CO2 Avoided/Sequestered: 339 metric tons
  • Air Pollution Removed: 4.56 tons
  • Water Runoff Avoided: 20,445 gallons

2024 Project Highlights:

  • Acres Replanted: 36
  • Trees Planted: 10,000
  • Tree Species: Ponderosa Pine, White Fir, Lodgepole Pine, Douglas Fir, Western Larch
  • Planting Timeline: April 1–June 30, 2024

“HDR has an amazing history of not just saying that we’re going to make sustainability a priority but a track record of investing in communities," said HDR Corporate Sustainability Director Lisa Fewins. “I am proud that HDR had the opportunity to contribute to restoring an Oregonian forest. Through our grant and collaboration with the Arbor Day Foundation, the 400 acres will have a future."
