Doug Thiessen Shares Maritime Industry Experience with Ports & Harbors Magazine
HDR's West Region Maritime Lead Doug Thiessen recently shared his thoughts on the state of the port infrastructure market with Ports & Harbors, the magazine of the International Association of Ports and Harbors. Thiessen works with ports across western North America and previously served for years as the chief harbor engineering and managing director for the Port of Long Beach.
Ports face numerous challenges, including aging facilities, climate change and technological disruptions. Thankfully, as Thiessen explained, recent funding from federal and state sources and private sector investments are supporting improvements and providing an opportunity to make the most of new innovations.
“Ports understand their existing clients and customers very well, but it is also important for them to explore new industries and technology, such as offshore wind and zero emissions equipment,” Thiessen said. “Planning studies and analyses of their operations can help ports make the most of their infrastructure and growth opportunities.”
