Designing for Equity in Maternal and Infant Health

Inova Loudon Hospital NICU

Healthcare equity is a long-standing mission in both the healthcare design and healthcare industries; however, disparities in care are still affecting life expectancy and quality of life for underserved communities. For example, Black women and infants have significantly higher pregnancy-related mortality rates than their white counterparts. It is incumbent upon health architects to design spaces that help close this gap whenever possible. In a new article, HDR's Jeri Brittin, Francesqca Jimenez and Melissa Templeton dive into the root causes of these disparities and explore different design strategies that can address them. They also explore the importance of forming diverse project teams and building trust with communities through culturally sensitive outreach programs.
