Manuel F. Carballo, P.E., S.E.
Global Bridges & Structures Director
“As engineers we should think beyond the ‘nuts and bolts.’ We need to look at projects in a more holistic way. Our clients want durable structures that support vibrant communities, better mobility and greater quality of life.”
Serving as our global bridges & structures director, Manuel’s job is to look forward. He works with our local offices to build a bridges and structures practice that thinks ahead and embraces new technologies and solutions. To that end, he provides technical as well as operational and new business support.
Manuel has worked on the $2.3 billion I-4 Ultimate project, the largest public-private partnership project in Florida Department of Transportation history, as well as the $2 billion Mobile River Bridge in Alabama. He’s passionate about integrating new technologies, structure types and materials in our designs to help clients enhance safety, durability and sustainability while also controlling construction costs and durations.
A member of the American Segmental Bridge Institute and American Society of Civil Engineers, Manuel is also a senior professional associate at HDR.
With more than three decades in the industry, Manuel’s role includes mentoring and working with the next generation of engineering leaders in our TaLON program (Technical and Leadership Optimization Network). The program pairs skilled technical experts with mid-level professionals looking for their next challenge.
“Bridges come in many sizes and shapes, and I like to emphasize to our young engineers to try and appreciate all of them; they will learn something new with every project.”
