Matt Stone, P.E., has been named the technical leader of HDR’s global highways program.

Drawing on nearly three decades of highway planning and design experience, Stone will lead over 1,000 highway professionals across North America, the U.K., the Middle East and Australia. His primary responsibility will be maintaining HDR’s high level of technical proficiency and quality deliverables.

Based in Anchorage, Alaska, Stone has been a leader on numerous high-profile projects in Alaska, including the Airport Way/Steese Expressway Intersection Reconstruction and the reconstruction of Seward Highway MP 75-90 Road and Bridge Rehabilitation, which won an American Council of Engineering Companies' National Grand Award this year. Altogether, Stone has designed more than 300 miles of roadway and over 100 intersections and has managed nearly $2.5 billion worth of construction projects in the state.

“Matt has shown his extraordinary technical acumen and leadership qualities during his time managing our program in Alaska,” said HDR Transportation Planning and Design Director Andy Lauzier. “I’m excited to see how those capabilities will help take our global program to new heights.”

Stone earned his degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and is a registered professional engineer in both civil and environmental design. His relationships and history of successful work for the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities have been instrumental in supporting key infrastructure projects in that state.

He has extensive experience as a consultant, but he began his career in the Army as an engineer officer, where he gained valuable leadership skills. He is also very active in industry organizations, including acting as the co-chair of Alaska DOT Commissioners Steering Committee and serving multiple terms as ACEC Alaska’s national director.

“It is an exciting time to be in the transportation industry and HDR is well positioned to create opportunities from the challenges,” Stone said. “I am proud to help lead our dedicated professionals as they blend innovation, technology and talent to deliver the efficient and safe road networks of tomorrow that our communities need.”
