For more than a decade, Nelson has dedicated his career to developing large-scale community designs, typically in new growth areas with transit possibilities. His projects cover various geographical regions, including the U.S., Canada, China and Saudi Arabia. Nelson manages many of the international urban design projects for the Berkeley, California, office. In recent years, he has focused more on communities in the U.S. where housing and active transportation infrastructures are needed. Nelson finds it rewarding to experience different cultures and meet people of various backgrounds while working on urban design and planning projects.

A keen urbanist, Nelson is committed to promoting U.S.-rooted best practices in urban design worldwide. He is a contributing author for the International Society of City and Regional Planners, published the translated version of “Urbanism in the Age of Climate Change” book, contributed to the “TOD in China” book with his team in Berkeley, and helped the publication of the translated version of SmartCode.

Nelson is an active member of industry organizations, including the American Institute of Certified Planners and the Congress for the New Urbanism Urban Land Institute. Believing in “think globally and act locally,” Nelson serves as transportation commissioner in Albany and California.
