Capilano University Tantalus Student Housing Building
Capilano University Tantalus Student Housing Building
Student Housing Animated by Green Space
Located on the forested campus in the North Shore mountains, evergreen forests surround the Tantalus building, which is adjacent to a wetland habitat. The project is an important piece of the campus master plan, which calls to Animate the North, and uses green spaces as the glue to hold the campus together. Welcoming students coming home from a long day of study, the mass timber dining facility with a green roof anchors an animated central courtyard, inviting students from all over campus to lounge, dine, study and build lasting friendships.
HDR is providing owner’s technical services and served as the designer in this design-build delivery. Completed in two phases, the project will provide a total of 500 beds of student housing. Representing the first of two phases, this 6-story wood and mass timber building provides 362 beds, a 200-seat dining facility and a significant number of student-focused services and spaces. The building is designed to meet rigorous BC Energy Step Code 4 and LEED Gold standards.
