Esri ArcGIS Providing Solutions to a Broken System

When its legacy, CAD-based geographic information system failed to communicate across departments, the San Juan Water District was left with information bottlenecks and data silos. District's staff could no longer collaborate efficiently as they were forced to rely on outdated systems of unrelated datasets and paper map books. SJWD decided it was time for an effective solution that not only would replace the old system but also ensure durability for a sustainable future. 

SJWD, a mid-sized utility that serves retail and wholesale customers in eastern Sacramento and southern Placer counties, is among the first to use Esri’s upgraded ArcGIS platform. To help with data migration and tool implementation, SJWD teamed with HDR. One of the driving points for this decision was our partnership with Esri and our Esri specialty designations for ArcGIS Online and Utility Network Management.

This new tool enables tracing in the field and on desktop and mobile devices as well. This allows the district to quickly identify system and customer impact during outages. It also helps engineering and operations teams to proactively determine areas exposed to potential vulnerabilities. 

GIS data is now available to the entire organization via web applications and a portal. The centralization of data and applications was a major element of the needs expressed by the district. The new system provides improved communication throughout the organization and has increased operational efficiencies and performance.
