As the rail industry faces considerable funding challenges, the United Kingdom has an opportunity to improve how rail projects are delivered. Transforming the status quo will help create savings and greater efficiencies.

Steve Feeney, HDR’s head of transportation for the United Kingdom, recently shared four key elements with Rail Professional magazine. Feeney brings over two decades of experience from the infrastructure industry with a diverse background spanning the UK, Asia and North America. His experience includes project and program management as well as commercial management, organizational change and securing rail consulting and design projects across Europe.

Feeney identified four broad categories that will be central to the transformation of the rail industry in the coming years — sustainability, digitalization, planning reform and integrated delivery teams — and explained why each was critical.

“To succeed in this transformation, we need a comprehensive approach, working with industry leaders, to ensure projects are set up and delivered right the first time,” Feeney commented. “With the appropriate planning options, contractual arrangements, and forward-thinking digital solutions, we can ensure a sustainable rail industry which contributes to the country's prosperity.”
