How PFAS Regulations May Affect Landfills and Industry

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, regulations continue to evolve after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized long-awaited drinking water standards for six common PFAS, and two targets for upcoming regulations could be landfill leachate and industrial wastewater. Both significantly contribute PFAS to municipal wastewater facilities, which are not typically designed and operated to remove these compounds effectively.

Jeff Murray, HDR’s landfills practice lead, and John Schubert, HDR’s industrial process technology lead, discussed what landfills need to know about PFAS regulations in a recent article “What landfills need to know about PFAS regulations” for the American Public Works Association.

They cover several topics, including:

  • Current PFAS regulations and how they affect landfills.
  • What landfills can do right now.
  • Potential costs and responsibilities for landfills and industrial users.
  • PFAS removal and destruction methods under development.
  • How landfills can be a PFAS solutions provider.

Jeff and John are experts in the space, leading the development and implementation of a process to both remove and destroy PFAS in landfill leachate.
