Behind the Design of Pittsburgh International Airport's Terminal Modernization Program

At its most basic, the terminal modernization program at Pittsburgh International Airport is about updating and right-sizing a facility built as a connecting hub decades ago but it now serves mostly as an origin-and-destination airport. Prompted by the vision of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, however, the design team sought to do much more — celebrating the community of Pittsburgh and creating a facility that will serve as a memorable gateway to the city.

To commemorate the design of the terminal as it nears its opening, the Allegheny County Airport Authority created a two-part video, “A Pavilion in Penn’s Woods.” HDR Aviation Director Bill Peduzzi is featured in the second of the two videos and explained how elevating the passenger experience was a key goal of the project from the beginning.

“We looked at every element of the design from the time a passenger or meeter-greeter would enter the property,” Peduzzi said. “The Authority really challenged us to bring the passenger and the meeter-greeter experience to a whole different level.”

The terminal is scheduled to open to travelers in 2025. Watch the first video on the airport’s Blue Sky News website.
