Award of Merit

Botton-Champlimaud Pancreatic Cancer Center Operating Room

The Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Centre was one of three projects to win the Award of Merit, the showcase's highest honor. The Centre is the world’s first stand-alone facility custom designed to improve treatment and ultimately the quality of life for those affected by the disease. It follows a translational methodology that brings clinicians, surgeons, researchers and scientists into the same space to reduce the time required for treatment.

Honorable Mention

Rush University Medical Center Joan and Paul Rubschlager Building Exterior

The iconic The Joan & Paul Rubschlager Building at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago completes a campus transformation on eleven acres in the United States’s largest urban medical district to a hub for leading edge patient care, research, and education. The overarching mission is a belief that cancer and neuroscience patients deserve services designed to meet their needs and complex problems in a streamlined, supportive and highly effective way.

Moffitt Cancer Center, Moffitt McKinley Hospital

Finalist

Moffitt Cancer Center Exterior

Designed to inspire strength, hope, and courage, the new Moffitt Cancer Center expands capacity for inpatient hospital care and modernizes their ability to treat solid tumor cancers through a significant investment in image-guided surgical oncology. The new facility brings a collaborative and translational environment to campus where clinicians and researchers can more easily work together to accelerate discovery in cancer treatment.

Almoosa Rehabilitation Hospital

Finalist

Almoosa Rehabilitation Hospital Foliage

Addressing the need for specialized rehabilitation and long-term care hospitals in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, the Almoosa Rehabilitation Hospital takes design cues from the Al-Ahsa region’s natural vernacular. The undulating shading device which shields the facility from the harsh elements evokes the eternal movement of sand dunes. Expressing the human instinct to care for our most vulnerable, the sinuous screen is designed to parametrically change from façade to façade to compensate for the solar heat gain of its specific location and function.
