Library is Modernized with Sustainability, Social Equity in Mind

A woman sitting in a window seat inside the city of Kingston's Frontenac Central Branch Public Library. The wall is exposed brick with a work of art blue in hue showing a ship sailing in the ocean. There is a white table to the left of the window and a white chair to the right of the window.

"We're very proud to further the city's climate action goals with this renovation ... KFPL is thrilled to have a bright, accessible and sustainable space at the heart of our library system." — Laura Carter, Chief Librarian and CEO, Kingston Frontenac Public Library

Not only is the Kingston Frontenac Public Library Central Branch the first LEED ID+C v4 Gold certified library in the city of Kingston, Ontario, but it's also performing 55% lower than the national benchmark for library energy use efficiency and scored 24 out of 25 points for optimized energy performance. The library's excellence in green building performance results from its modernization, which integrated new mechanical, electrical, and life safety systems. In addition, the complete interior renovation preserved its stone and brick exterior, maximized daylight, provided a flexible and adaptable layout, and incorporated locally available finishes with low-carbon emissions.
