Almoosa Rehabilitation Hospital Makes History with LEED Platinum Certification
The new Almoosa Rehabilitation Hospital, a striking facility bringing world-class care to Saudi Arabia, has been awarded LEED v4 BD+C Healthcare Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council — its highest recognition.
The facility is one of a select few hospitals on the planet to achieve this classification and is the first hospital to do so in the Middle East, cementing it as a milestone achievement in sustainable healthcare design.
"Sustainable design is not just what we do — it’s who we are," said Mohammed Ayoub, design director at HDR. "Nearly two decades ago, we set out to make a difference with a LEED Gold-certified building for Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, and that journey has been one of perpetual growth and unwavering ambition. Today, achieving LEED Platinum for the Almoosa Rehabilitation Hospital is more than a milestone — it’s a reflection of our belief that architecture can and must contribute to a better world. LEED is the most utilized green building rating system in the world, providing a framework for sustainable design. It judges projects on a variety of criteria, including impact on the surrounding environment, energy efficiency and use of sustainable materials. At Almoosa Rehabilitation Hospital, sustainable design elements include an innovative shade that saves energy while shielding users from the harsh elements and a water reclamation system that utilizes condensate from the HVAC to support the facility's green spaces.
"This recognition represents a significant step in bringing sustainable healthcare to the community, with the transparency that third party certification creates," said Duncan Griffin, director of sustainability, health at HDR. "Very careful procedures were followed to create a safe and healthy interior environment while reducing harm to nature."
