Homer Seawall Revetment Project Honored With EPA Award

The City of Homer’s seawall revetment project has received the Excellence in Climate Change Mitigation and Resiliency award from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Drinking Water State Revolving Fund AQUARIUS Recognition program. The AQUARIUS program celebrates projects that are innovative, sustainable and protect public health.

HDR’s work on the project included an alternatives analysis and design services for the rock revetment to mitigate scour at the existing coastal seawall, which was originally constructed in 2003. The revetment provides enhanced erosion protection for the land behind the seawall where drinking water and wastewater infrastructure are present as well as several residences.

“Homer Alaska is a very special place,” said Ronald McPherson, Alaska water business group manager and northwest U.S. coastal lead at HDR. “It is a vibrant community with proactive and forward-thinking city leadership. Having the opportunity to support Homer with projects that have a tangible positive impact on the community has been a real honor.”

The project is one of twelve projects by state or local governments and drinking water utilities recognized by the 2023 AQUARIUS program and one of just six awarded with exceptional status. Awardees were recognized on April 3, 2024 at the Council of Infrastructure Financing Authorities Summit in Washington, D.C.
