BNSF's Logistics Park Kansas City intermodal facility improves access to cost-effective, low-emission intermodal service between the central Midwest, ports and other major markets using BNSF's transcontinental and I-35 trade corridors.

Early in the project, we conducted a traffic study, completed a concept design study and developed a request for proposals for solicitation of developers. We later provided final engineering design as well as permitting and environmental analysis, and we assisted in development of a design-build package for facilities.

The 433-acre, $250 million facility opened in October 2013 and features an initial lift capacity of 500,000 containers annually, with the possibility to expand to 1.5 million. The Logistics Park Kansas City intermodal facility incorporates a number of advanced technologies, such as wide-span electric, rail-mounted, zero-emission gantry cranes; an automated gate system with state-of-the-art security for trucks entering and exiting the facility; a rail car repair crane; and a virtual weigh station. The facility is designed to improve security, increase throughput and reduce truck idle time and emissions.
