Sustainability at the Forefront
The new Sam Farr United States Crop Improvement and Protection Research Center is a keystone in the United States Department of Agriculture’s effort to promote sustainable agricultural practices. The facility, spanning three brand-new buildings, houses research to improve organic crop production nationwide while protecting the fragile marine ecosystems in nearby Monterey Bay.
Convenience and Collaboration
The Center seamlessly blends its laboratory, office and greenhouse spaces, providing a convenient experience for researchers while creating new opportunities for conversation and collaboration. As a USDA Agricultural Research Service facility, partnership with higher education is foundational to its mission. The space is designed to accommodate researchers from USDA and the University of California-Davis to work on projects for which they receive grants. The facility also spearheads communication of research results, playing an essential role in the acceptance and adoption of new innovative technologies and methods.
Key design features of the new facility include:
- Pedestrian bridge connects the greenhouse to the laboratories and office buildings.
- State-of-the-art microbiology laboratories with biosafety level 1 or 2.
- Sustainable construction which meets LEED standards and US Green Building Council specifications for sustainability, energy efficiency and optimal performance.
With its forward-thinking design philosophy and focus on sustainability in its mission and design, the Center is a shining example of a modern agricultural research facility and will attract top talent from around the world.
