Teaching With Mass Timber

Rendering of the new Architecture School Expansion at the University of Nebraska Lincoln

Already a popular site for student tours, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Architecture Expansion — currently under construction and set to open in the fall of 2024 — checks all the boxes of sustainability, aesthetics and function. As one of the first mass timber constructed architecture schools in the U.S., the four-storey building, meticulously integrated into the existing campus, is more than an incubator for aspiring design professionals — it's a living laboratory — where students have the unique opportunity to study mass timber in a building where they can observe its performance firsthand.

"With a focus on sustainability and carbon reduction, the addition was initially designed to be 100% mass timber, but our team developed a more cost-efficient design by converting the interstitial support spaces between the existing building and the new studios to conventional steel framing."  — Tom Trenolone, design director, HDR
