Heilman Awarded 2022 Orville T. Magoon Sustainable Coasts Award
Dan Heilman, coastal engineer and coastal restoration lead based in HDR’s Corpus Christi, Texas, office, has been named the 2022 Orville T. Magoon Sustainable Coasts Award by the American Society of Civil Engineers/Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute.
Candidates are awarded based on contributions for sustainable engineering practices in managing shorelines and coastal infrastructure through research, design, construction and management of natural and built environments in coastal areas. Heilman received this award for excellence in the professional practice of coastal sustainability.
Heilman has deep experience and knowledge of coastal processes and resources. As a leader in the industry, his work covers most coastal shorelines across the U.S. with a large focus on the Texas coastline. Since 1999, he has supported numerous habitat protection and wetland restoration projects for the Texas General Land Office and other clients in Corpus Christi, Galveston and South Padre Island. He has also led the design for major channel improvements in Freeport, Brownsville, the Port of Houston and the Sabine-Neches Waterway.
Heilman is a board-certified diplomate in coastal engineering through the Academy of Coastal, Ocean, Port, and Navigational Engineers and a member of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying. A graduate of Texas A&M University, he holds Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in ocean engineering with 29 years of experience in delivering analysis and design of coastal projects, including beach nourishment, shoreline protection, flood protection and navigation improvements.
