Critical Power: Thoughtful Arc Flash Mitigation, Reduction and Proper Design

Electrical controls in a corridor.

Electrical engineers must develop an understanding of the necessary codes, standards and design requirements when designing to mitigate arc flash problems. De-energizing electrical equipment provides the safest conditions for electrical workers. However, in most industry applications, de–energizing the electrical system may not be practical and in some cases, may result in a greater safety hazard.

Brian Fernandes, electrical section manager at HDR, presented a Consulting–Specifying Engineer webcast, exploring standards, de–energization and design techniques related to arc flash mitigation.
