Duncan Griffin Promoted to Director of Sustainability for HDR’s Health Design Practice
Duncan Griffin, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, has been promoted to director of sustainability, health for HDR’s global architecture practice.
Most recently managing principal of HDR’s Seattle architecture studio, Griffin’s priorities for his new role include connecting with clients to support sustainable and regenerative design, reducing embodied carbon and long-term operational costs for healthcare facilities and improving community health and care environments by collaborating with multidisciplinary design teams and technical experts across the firm.
“Investing in sustainable design innovation to prepare healthcare facilities for the future is an incredible opportunity and responsibility,” Griffin said. “As a top-ranked health design firm, HDR influences the practice of global architecture; I am fully committed to making a positive impact as director of sustainability for health.”
With more than 33 years of experience designing healing environments and sustainable solutions for healthcare facilities, Griffin’s recent accomplishments as Seattle architecture managing principal include growing HDR’s Pacific Northwest architecture practice to nearly 30 staff in six years, with the studio delivering three health, science and civic buildings to open in 2024.
“Healthcare facilities are among the most energy-intensive building types, and achieving sustainability goals requires specialization and expertise,” said Hank Adams, HDR global director, health. “Duncan understands the complexities of healthcare environments and is passionate about improving global health through sustainable design. I have no doubt he will exceed expectations in this new role.”
With a design portfolio of net-zero-ready and net-positive architecture projects, Griffin regularly presents decarbonization and sustainable design strategies at industry conferences and authors contributed articles for trade journals.
