LHSC Expands Patient Care Space to Address COVID-19 Pandemic
London Health Sciences Centre in London, Ontario, called upon our architects to plan and develop design concepts for a temporary care facility. Including patient bays and staff support areas, this design concept was implemented to adapt the Western Fair District Agriplex building into a field hospital to assist with the expected surge of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Features of the LHSC Field Hospital:
- This 144-bed field hospital holds 14 pods of 18 patient bays to each pod, constructed using pre-fabricated divider panels.
- The location will accommodate recovering, lower-acuity, confirmed patients with COVID-19 who are not yet well enough to return home.
- HDR biocontainment experts assisted with the planning and development of the LHSC Field Hospital concept and design. Additional space is available at the Western Fair District site if needed for expansion.
LHSC also developed a website to keep their community informed on updates and progress during design and construction of the Field Hospital.
In addition to HDR, London Health Sciences Centre partnered with GBI Facilities Management, Convergint, Centerline Construction, Chorley and Bissett, Western Fair District, and the London Fire Department; as well as the LHSC staff and numerous donors and community members.
