Integrating Artificial Intelligence Into Transportation Planning and Design

Artificial intelligence is assuming a larger role in transportation design, planning, development and maintenance. While the integration of AI is a welcome addition to the overall process, it’s crucial for the industry to adapt thoughtfully as it rapidly evolves.

HDR Senior Transportation Technology Lead Jim Hanson and Digital Delivery AI Services Lead Pedram Oskouie recently wrote an article for Transportation Builder magazine discussing how AI is enabling proactive transportation decisions by planners and engineers. The experts highlighted how the technology efficiently handles tasks once deemed too costly. AI has been seamlessly integrated into various stages of projects, from analyzing traffic data for enhanced traffic flow to establishing a centralized database for streamlined project communication.

Hanson and Oskouie also discussed the future of AI, highlighting its emerging potential for the transportation industry. They emphasized the importance for organizations within the industry to respond and adapt to the AI movement with a strategic and forward-thinking approach.

“The integration of AI and big data presents a transformative opportunity for the transportation sector, but navigating this landscape requires a strategic and forward-thinking approach,” noted Hanson and Oskouie. “Enterprises need to prioritize solutions that directly drive value and efficiency in design, construction and operation, recognizing that AI’s true power lies in delivering tangible benefits.”
